A Magic Space of Creation

The special Roulette production streamed April 24th, 2021, from the loft of artists Alain Kirili and Ariane Lopez-Huici was more than a pleasant surprise for me. We had shot it at the end of March, an intimate early evening chance for me to play in the wonderful lovely acoustic space surrounded by Alain’s sculpture and Ariane’s photography. During one of the shakuhachi pieces Alain created some large brush paintings. I constructed the playing order in the simplest way, 2 shakuhachi pieces, 2 on clarinet, 2 on alto. I was thinking these could be reordered in the production, as I expected them to be woven together with the interview material we did and the filming of artwork which was done while I was not playing. As it turned out, Wolf Daniel of Roulette also kept it very simple, using only a short interview at the front and keeping all the music in the order I played it, interspersing with live footage of the artwork most of which I believe was shot concurrently as I played. I think it works surprisingly well . Please give it a view/listen here. I am especially happy to be able to shine a light on the work of Alain, who is dealing with serious health challenges. Also it gives a chance to evoke all the wonderful evenings of music that were hosted there by Ariane and Alain with a live audience. I hope that we can return to those days soon.
