"Z" JE ME CROIS EN ENFER DONC J’Y SUIS
CREATIVE MUSICAL THEATER PRODUCTION
Les Subsistances - Lyon, France
A return journey to meet Rimbaud, through movement and hearing, was Lukas Hemleb and Ned Rothenberg’s aim. The German theatre director and American musician will allow the audience to hear Rimbaud, the forever white-hot shining star of French poetry, in a different way.
How did they manage to create a show about Rimbaud, the “never-ending dazzling light”, the “thought that never concludes”, a “true incitement to identification"?
“Rimbaud defies any interpretation”, says Lukas Hemleb. “Let’s forget the sung poetry, the reciting of his poems over a jazz or classical music background. Let’s omit the adaptations in which actors play Rimbaud and Verlaine, Rimbaud’s family or the people in his life. Disregard any device in which Rimbaud speaks in the first person. Let’s imagine instead a game with no rules, where everything breaks up and fragments, in order to rebuild itself through music. Let’s not talk about Rimbaud. Let’s imagine an alternate universe. Five people are present - two musicians and three actors who form something like a trio of travellers, spiritual jesters, smugglers, explorers [...]. We will aim to retrace Rimbaud’s impulses, his surges towards the exit door, his tendency to project towards the outside - outside society, outside Europe, outside the world itself."
Director Lukas Hemleb has worked in the theatre and opera on every major European stage. For this journey with Rimbaud, he has invited Ned Rothenberg to join him. This impossibly talented free jazz musician from New York has mapped out new roads in the study of wind instruments. Also with them is Kazuhisa Uchihashi, a Japanese guitarist producing extraordinary sounds. This will be a mad venture, an intense tour entirely dedicated to the discovery of Rimbaud’s language, its melody, its imagery: “Comme je descendais des fleuves impassibles… ”. This return trip will carry risks for those who dare give themselves body and soul to poetry.

The MIVOS quartet, recently praised by Time Out New York as an "excellent ensemble", is devoted to performing the works of contemporary composers, presenting new music to diverse audiences. Since the quartet's inception they have performed and closely collaborated with an ever-expanding cadre of international composers who represent multiple aesthetics of contemporary classical composition. Commissioning and premiering new music for string quartet is essential to the quartet's mission; MIVOS has performed works by emerging and established composers including Kirsten Broberg, Juan Calderon, Anna Clyne, Luke DuBois, Wayne Horvitz, Sam Pluta, Wolfgang Rihm and Huang Ruo. They have appeared at venues including The Stone, Issue Project Room, The Tank NYC, Monkeytown, CUNY Graduate Center, Galapagos Art Space, Roulette and the Brecht forum, and were featured performers for the 2008 American Music Center Annual Meeting at the Chelsea Art Museum. Beyond expanding the string quartet repertoire, MIVOS is committed to working with guest artists and exploring multi-media projects involving live video and electronics. Improvisation is also an integral part of their performances and has led to collaborations with artists such as Ned Rothenberg, Chris Speed and Mark Feldman. MIVOS' performance of Ned Rothenberg's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, recently released on John Zorns Tzadik label, was described as "played with spontaneity and dexterity" (The Strad Magazine).

Tori Ensemble is a world music ensemble featuring Korean traditional artists and American free jazz artists - transcending musical borders through a mingling of jazz, new music, and Korean influences. “Arirang” is a song of love and longing, an ancient Korean folk music taking on various different musical interpretations in each of Korea’s diverse local regions. Tonight’s performance will show the most basic, instinctive beauty of Arirang, with the unique melodies and rhythms of versions from Gangwon (East), Sangju (South), Wonsan (North), and Seoul (West) fusing seamlessly with the modern sound of the Tori Project. Each of the seven performers move freely between solo and ensemble performances, eliminating the boundaries imposed between instruments and in music.
Featuring HEO Yoon-jeong (geomun-go), KANG Kwon-soon (jeongga), MIN Young-chi (daegum & janggu), LEE Suk-joo (piri), Ned Rothenberg (clarinet & saxophone), Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), Erik Friedlander (cello)

SYNC
NYC/BALTIMORE/D.C.
In SYNC (see more info), Rothenberg is joined by Jerome Harris, acoustic guitar/acoustic bass guitar and Samir Chatterjee, tabla and percussion.
Bob Blumenthal gave a nice basic sketch of the band in aBoston Globe review:
"Sync might be envisioned as a modified sax/bass/drum trio, where the bassist has been replaced by Jerome Harris on either acoustic guitar or acoustic bass guitar, and where the drummer’s role is taken by Samir Chatterjee on tabla and dumbek. With Rothenberg moving among alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the Japanese shakuhachi and composing looping ribbons of melody with odd rhythmic contours, the trio has found a most palatable merger of jazz and Asian music.
The uncommon instrumentation is enhanced by a shared sense of purpose that gives Sync its winning character. Each player displays both the techniques and the sensitivity required to function as both soloist and accompanist, allowing Sync to maintain its three-way conversations after Rothenberg has finished soloing. This is not simply a matter of the leader’s ability to sustain extended melodic and rhythmic variations at lower volumes through circular breathing; it also results from the assurance that allows Harris to sustain a pronounced rhythmic underpinning in his guitar work and rare melodic fluency on bass. Chatterjee, who can sing and then play back the most complex patterns in the manner of the great tabla masters, also senses how to highlight more compact, swing-oriented parts through shifts in accents and dynamics."

SHAKUHACHI EXPLORATION
WITH
KINYA SOGAWA
Plus special guests: Elizabeth Brown, Ned Rothenberg, Ralph Samuelson & Laurie Sogawa
Tokyo shakuhachi virtuoso Kinya Sogawa makes his much anticipated full-length U.S. concert debut! Unique to the shakuhachi world in that he is both a brilliant performer and highly acclaimed instrument maker, Sogawa is active in diverse genres of traditional and contemporary music–including enka and video game music. For this all-shakuhachi exploration, Sogawa performs meditative solo pieces passed down by the komuso wandering monks of the 17th century as well as new 21st-century works by composers Ned Rothenberg and Elizabeth Brown that expand the sonic language of that tradition, creating new possibilities for the instrument.

2 NIGHTS OF
CHAMBER MUSIC
RETROSPECTIVE
On Nov. 9th and 10th at Roulette I will present two evenings of my chamber music along with some solo works.
Each night will feature the world premier presentation of a new string quartet, Viewfinder by the wonderful young MIVOS quartet. My image with this quartet is the effect on a 3D image created by the viewfinder of a fine camera like a Hasselblad. With low depth of field different planes of the same image go in and out of focus revealing multiple mythical images built on a central ‘real’ one. Through lines moving in and out of phase and shifting harmonic contexts I hope to create something analogous.
In 2000, I made a much acclaimed cd on the Tzadik composer’s series, Ghost Stories. Glen Hirschberg in the LA Weekly wrote: Ghost Stories, a collection of classically themed chamber pieces, may be (Rothenberg’s) most perfectly realized release to date. Austere but not forbidding, ...all these ghost stories ../rise far above pastiche or homage, and really are haunted.
On November 9th, I am very excited to have the original players from Ghost Stories: Min Xiao Fen on Pipa, Erik Friedlanderon Cello and Satoshi Takeishi on Percussion. I have not had the chance to present the title piece of this cd since its release. In addition, I will perform the largely through-composed work from the same album, Duo for Alto Saxophone and Percussion with Satoshi and we will have a group improvisation with the four of us.
On November 10th, in addition to Viewfinder, I will join Mivos for my Quintet for Clarinet and Strings , also released on Tzadik.
Thom Jurek in All Music Guide commented: “a startling, mature work that embodies many of his career-long traits while bringing others into view for the first time. This is one of the more important works Rothenberg has issued so far, and after 26 albums, that’s saying plenty."
Also, I will present new solo works for alto saxophone and bass clarinet. These are the only concert of my compositions in New York City this fall so I hope to see you there.

THE SOLO WORKS
RE-SOUND AND RESOUND
After his recovery from a devastating accident in 2010, Ned Rothenberg will return to the crux of his musical oeuvre, solo work, in 2012-13. The focus will be on sound and space, with a series of concerts in churches and other resonant and serene locations. Here the beauty and complexity of Rothenberg’s sound world can create a rich, sensual environment and the listener experiences visceral rather than just intellectual stimulation. These performances will offer an inviting alternative to today’s multi-tasking world. In addition to acoustic qualities, spaces will be sought where the audience can escape the conflicting energies of daily life and find singular focus. No clubs, no bars, no social hubbub. However, the goal is not just relaxation, it is a place where this unique music can speak in all its vibrancy.
This booking will be handled internationally by Regina Greene of Frontporch Productions.

NED ROTHENBERG

Roulette, Brooklyn NY
Five Beasts is a set of human portraits, men and women seen as if by an animal, the language a kind of music or noise, the gestures unaccountable. We are, most of us, lost in a forest of our own design, a welter of unconscious narratives, the pull of our complicated past, an obsessive constructor of futures, howling our troubled allegory of self: this is our masquerade-cum-delusion. But the animal informs and teaches us – if we listen. We are absurd and amazed, and sometimes beautiful, in our utter ignorance.
Performance artist/vocalist Rinde Eckert and composer/performer Ned Rothenberg first worked together over 20 years ago in a production ofPower Failure by the Paul Dresher Ensemble and have fantasized about a future collaboration ever since. In October 2012, the chance came at the Walls and Bridges festival, presented at Roulette by Lyon’s Villa Gillet. The response to their Five Beasts was overwhelming, prompting Roulette director Jim Staley to invite Eckert and Rothenberg to expand the piece into an evening length work. Ned and Rinde are joined by beatbox artistAdam Matta in this new version.
Rinde Eckert is a writer, composer, singer, actor, and director whose music, music theater, and dance theater pieces have been performed throughout the United States and abroad. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition, a Marc Blitzstein Award (from The American Academy of Arts and Letters), an Obie Award (And God Created Great Whales), a Grammy Award (Lonely Motel – Music from Slide), an Alpert Award (2009), and a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award (2012). He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2007 forOrpheus X.

Adam Matta is a beatboxer and vocal performance artist from New York City. He has appeared with Bobby McFerrin at Carnegie Hall and featured on The Carolina Chocolate Drops' Grammy-nominated Leaving Eden, as well as The Hunger Games Soundtrack. Matta headlined 2009 UK Human Beatbox Convention, Joe's Pub, New Museum for Contemporary Art and Here Arts Center. He has been profiled on PBS, Showtime, CUNY-TV, WNYE and NPR and his music has appeared on "The L Word, Season II: Sessions (Tommy Boy)," and in the documentary, Planet B-Boy. Matta is Artist in Residence at Cornell University, Here Arts Center, Digital Performance Institute and League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots.

HISTORIC
CONNECTIONS
ON
3 CONSECUTIVE
EVENINGS
Suddenly, in mid-November, I have 3 very special concerts in 3 nights with people I have known and worked with over decades.
First, on Wednesday, November 19, Samm Bennett, my old partner in crime with Semantics, who has lived for 18 years in Tokyo, makes an all too rare visit to NYC. Samm has developed a career as a singer-songwriter which builds from his foundation as one of the groovingest percussion wizards ever. We will play together at Roulette with the great bassist, Stomu Takeishi, doing some of Samm's songs, some heavy beat improvisation and some whirlwind spontaneity with Samm's special guest, the one and only Shelly Hirsch.
I have only worked with one other vocal diva as unique as Shelly, Sainkho Namtchylak. Amazingly, the Tuvan temptress is stopping in NYC in her seemingly never ending globe-trotting career (recent stops include Alma-Ata and Shanghai…) and we will join forces the next evening, Wednesday, Nov. 20th at the Douglass st. Music Collective. Sainkho and I worked extensively as a duo from 1991 to 1995, doing maybe 50 concerts together from Archangelsk to Florence to Seattle and all spots in between. This work was documented on an out-of-print cd on Leo Records, Amulet, which can still be downloaded from Itunes and Amazon. She is capable of an unbelievable range of sonic and emotional expression - someone not to miss in your life experience.
Then, on Thursday, the 21st, at The Firehouse Space in Williamsburg, I will join forces with 2 unsurpassed virtuosi, pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and violinist, Mark Feldman. I guess they are the relative newcomers in this crowd as I've only worked with Mark about 20 years and didn't meet Sylvie until maybe 12 years ago - practically yesterday! With some folks the music just flows and you feel anything is possible. For me these are them! Their work on Tzadik and ECM, doing their own compositions and those of John Zorn is staggeringly strong.

R.U.B. at Jazz Art Sengawa Festival
Ned Rothenberg and Samm Bennett have a long history of collaboration, most notably in the seminal ‘downtown’ band of the late 1980s, Semantics, along with guitarist Elliott Sharp. In 1996 Bennett relocated from New York City to Tokyo, where he works with some of Japan’s leading musicians. From that time to 2006 Rothenberg was a frequent visitor and performer on the Tokyo scene, so they joined together with the sublime guitarist (and leader of the acclaimed improvising power trio Altered States) Kazuhisa Uchihashi to form R.U.B. – and with a bit of wordplay offered their premier release, are you be.
Now, after much too long a hiatus, R.U.B. rides again! Rothenberg returns to Tokyo in late summer, 2014 and the trio will appear at the famous Jazz Art Sengawa Festival!

PREMIER AT
MUSIC FROM JAPAN
FESTIVAL
Music from Japan has commissioned me to write a the central piece for their East Asian Vibrancy event featuring sho, pipa, and komungo. It will be premiered at Asia Society, NYC, 8pm on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 with further performances on Tuesday, Feb. 10th at the Freer Gallery in Washington, DC, on March 6 at Fukushima City concert hall in Fukushima, Japan, and on March 8th at Tokyo's Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall.
This piece is written for the foremost international performer of the sho, Mayumi Miyata, the world-acclaimed pipa virtuoso Wu Man and the unique komungo voice, Jin Hi Kim.
Here are my program notes:
UNKAI (The Clouds Below)
One morning, while looking out over the sea from Big Sur, I was surprised to see clouds floating below me rather than water. Quite a magical sight, it evoked a kind of reversed spacial awareness. In Japan this called Unkai. I think of the sho as the most wonderfully cloud-like of instruments and was honored and excited when Music From Japan invited me to write for Mayumi Miyata, its foremost international exponent, together with Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man and Jim Hi Kim, who has her own strikingly individual approach to the Korean komungo. There is a challenge inherent in combining the sho's sonic world of gorgeous extended durations with the transient sound of plucked string instruments, always loudest in their initial strike and quickly fading. As I wrote I began to think of each instrument as a kind of natural character. The sho is the earthen cloud world, seemingly ephemeral but capable of great support. The pipa is the sprite, lithe animal who leaps and darts through the landscape. The komungo's gravity is a rhythmic, shamanistic structure on which the edifice rests. I am also sensitive to the subtexts in combining Korean, Chinese and Japanese instruments that were never originally intended to join together in an ensemble context. The aim to create harmony where there could be conflict may not be without political implication. So I chose what I feel are appropriate texts from the famed haiku master Basho (1644-1694) and his chinese antecedent Du Fu (712-770) :
In the opening, Mayumi Miyata sings the Basho text in Japanese:
夏草や兵どもが夢の跡
Summer Grasses
All that remain
of great soldiers imperial dreams
The piece closes with the first 4 lines of the Du Fu poem "View in Springtime", sung in Chinese by Wu Man while Jin Hi Kim sings her own Korean translation of the Basho.
The Du Fu has a ''meter'' of 5 syllables for each line which compliments the 5-7-5 haiku meter.
The complete Du Fu poem in translation:
View in Springtime
The country is in ruins, but hills and streams remain.
Grass and trees prosper as spring comes again.
Flowers spatter tears when hard times dominate.
Birds alarm the heart that hates to separate.
For three months beacon fires have continued to hold.
A letter from home now is worth its weight in gold.
Scratching my grey hair has made it grow so thin,
There's hardly enough to support a hairpin.
'Summer Grasses' to me are another form of Unkai. Current violence and belligerent posturing, not only in the far east, but all over our troubled planet, is indeed fated to pass with the tragic exertions of self-consciously 'strong' men. In my view it is thus fitting to have this piece played by 3 creative women drawing on inner strength rather than outer bluster.

RINDE ECKERT
March 16th - 29th
I will once again be in residence at Les Subsistances in Lyon, France, further developing and then performing the work 5 Beasts, with Rinde Eckert. We are bringing on board Mark DiChiazza, to contribute with projections, set design and co-direction. We will also have the wonderful beatbox master, Adam Matta, who joined us at the last Roulette performance.
Here is a link to an interview about the piece and see the last Roulette performance in VIMEO.

I am very excited to play again with framedrum master Glen Velez as part of Robert Browning’s ‘A World in Trance’ 4-day festival at Roulette.
I am developing a special duo program with framedrum master Glen Velez specifically for the "A World in Trance" festival. We will perform a nonstop, set-long exploration of grooves for your head, feet and heart. Glen will combine his drumming and overtone singing with my clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone and shakuhachi. Evolving rhythmic and melodic cycles will fill the resonant space of Roulette, taking the audience on a journey where time and space are suspended from the everyday.

SAINKHO NAMTCHYLAK
IN POLAND AND FRANCE
Sainkho and I worked extensively as a duo from 1991 to 1995, doing maybe 50 concerts together from Archangelsk to Florence to Seattle and all spots in between. This work was documented on an out-of-print cd on Leo Records, Amulet, which can still be downloaded from Itunes and Amazon. She is capable of an unbelievable range of sonic and emotional expression - someone not to miss in your life experience.

RILEY LEE
January 12, Saturday 8:30 PM
A late 'surprise' concert at Prospect Heights' beautiful Soapbox Gallery. It will be another 3 shakuhachi 'summit' with America's 'dean' of the instrument, Ralph Samuelson, my original teacher and Riley Lee, the great virtuoso who has been teaching recently at Princeton. We have all worked together extensively, including on my Tzadik CD "Ryu Nashi". The evening will include my composition Stand in Turn, for 1.8, 2.4, and 2.7 shakuhachi trio, duo works with Riley and me, the famous Shika no Tone and solo honkyoku traditional pieces. Acoustics at Soapbox are ideal.
