Solo
Rothenberg’s solo work on alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet and shakuhachi has been internationally acclaimed with over a thousand performances on 4 continents since 1980. His musical voice is built on a timbral palette which integrates ‘extended’ and standard instrumental technique into a seamless whole
Lockdown Trio
A new cooperative trio with pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, percussion Julian Sartorius and Rothenberg
Shakuhachi
After a 30 year romance with the shakuhachi, this is my first release exclusively devoted to compositions for the instrument. Why so long? When I say ‘romance’, I mean the word in its full literary compass, love and hate, ardor and betrayal.
Chamber Music
MIVOS' performance of Ned Rothenberg's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, recently released on John Zorns Tzadik label, was described as "played with spontaneity and dexterity" (The Strad Magazine).
Sync
In Sync, Rothenberg is joined by Jerome Harris, acoustic guitar/acoustic bass guitar and Samir Chatterjee, tabla and percussion.
R.U.B.
Ned Rothenberg and Samm Bennett have a long history of collaboration, most notably in the seminal ‘downtown’ band of the late 1980s, Semantics, along with guitarist Elliott Sharp. In 1996 Bennett relocated from New York City to Tokyo, where he works with some of Japan’s leading musicians. From that time to 2006 Rothenberg was a frequent visitor and performer on the Tokyo scene, so they joined together with the sublime guitarist (and leader of the acclaimed improvising power trio Altered States) Kazuhisa Uchihashi to form R.U.B. – and with a bit of wordplay offered their premier release, are you be.
Fell Clutch
“If Ornette Coleman innovated the 'time, no changes' approach to jazz, this quartet's advance was 'intensity over time” - Andrey Henkin, All About Jazz, NY (Selected top 10 performances of the year 2005)
